U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan has vowed to remove federal funding from Planned Parenthood as a part of legislation that would repeal the Affordable Care Act. Planned Parenthood receives approximately $400 million per year from Medicaid. To the surprise of no one, they are the largest abortion provider in the U.S., performing over 300,000 abortions per year (that’s the population of my city five times over). PP tries to downplay this, using some rather skewed metrics and marketing to make it look like abortion is only a small, almost insignificant part of their business.
As happens any time Planned Parenthood funding is threatened, the left starts circulating information about all of the non-abortion services that Planned Parenthood provides, such as disease screenings and other women’s health care (never mind that basically every other health care provider in the country provides these). It is an attempt to justify the murderous horror of abortion by saying that, well, they do nice things too. And the federal money they receive, it is claimed, does not go to abortion. Well, that’s all well and good, except that the federal money goes to operating expenses and other procedures, and therefore frees up PP’s funding from other sources to fund assembly line-style murder.
Think about how this logic would hold up in other arenas. Should we support the brutal and tyrannical government of North Korea because, while they oppress and murder their citizens, at least some of their work goes to infrastructure and development? Couldn’t we send them money as long as they promise only to build roads and bridges and not use it to run their prison camps? Of course not. So why should our tax money, MY tax money go to keep the lights on and doors open at an organization that is committed to killing infants? This is why conservatives want Planned Parenthood defunded. Because, while Planned Parenthood provides other healthcare services, their core purpose is to kill babies in the womb. The rest is window dressing. “If we do enough STD tests and ultrasounds, people will forget that we murder 300,000 people a year”.
Suppose that Congress offered Planned Parenthood the following deal: We’ll keep sending you money, but you have to stop doing abortions and only do those other services you rave about. Would Planned Parenthood accept that deal? I highly doubt it. Because all the spin and marketing in the world doesn’t change the fact that abortion is at the core of what Planned Parenthood does. Look at their name. The whole impetus behind Planned Parenthood is that people should not have to be parents unless they want to. Sexual liberty trumps any kind of personal responsibility. And if preserving that liberty, that freedom to plan and control ones own life, requires the murder of a child, so be it.
I would earnestly ask anyone who defends and supports Planned Parenthood to ask tough questions. What is this organization really about? Can I really trust the version of “women’s health care” that they are promoting? Does the legitimate health care procedures that this organization may provide justify what else they are doing? Are they deceptive in how they market/promote themselves? I think any fair person would find that Planned Parenthood is not an organization worthy of any private or public support. ♦
